Description
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "The introduction of English and English literature into the curriculum of the American high schools has not been accomplished without many difficulties. "The earliest American Academy was the one established at Philadelphia in 1751, which afterwards developed into the University of Pennsylvania." This academy was originally organized in three schools: the Latin school, the English school, and the mathematical school. The growth of the others at the expense of the English school was very displeasing to Franklin, who strongly advocated the study of English as part of the regular curriculum."
