Butler coached basketball and baseball at Colorado State College of Education (later named Colorado State College) beginning in 1940 until the beginning of World War II. After serving in the Navy he returned to coaching at the Colorado State College of Education. He coached basketball and baseball until 1956 and then began coaching baseball, exclusively. He coached until 1967. He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.
