It appears the date of this letter should be January 8, 1863, not 1862 as it is written. The referenced "great victory at Murfreesboro" by General William Rosecrans, otherwise known as the Battle of Stones River, was fought from December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863. Dan Parker's regiment, the 10th Illinois Infantry, also was not stationed in Nashville (Fort Negley) until late 1862/early 1863.
